Connecting Ideas to Communities: SA’s Tech Platform Aims to Improve Everyday Services
In an update published on 28 September 2026, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) highlighted Technology for Service Delivery, or T4SD.
Managed by the CSIR on behalf of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, the platform connects municipalities with technologies covering water, sanitation, energy, construction, waste and connectivity.
PRACTICAL TECHNOLOGY FOR EVERYDAY NEEDS
Examples already featured include porous paving that supports stormwater drainage, water-saving toilets and a rainwater harvesting system that uses water pressure rather than electricity to supply toilets or garden hoses.
These are the kinds of innovations whose value becomes clear in everyday use: how water reaches a building, how rainfall drains away and how essential services function.
AN INVITATION TO INNOVATORS
Technology owners can register and submit information about their solutions at t4sd.dsti.gov.za.
According to the CSIR, participation offers a free route into the service-delivery innovation process, including for technologies still being developed. Submissions are moderated for relevance and appropriate descriptions.
The platform does not itself certify or endorse technologies.
FROM DISCOVERY TO PRACTICAL USE
The opportunity here is straightforward: make useful ideas easier to find.
For an inventor, visibility can be an important step towards a conversation with a potential user. For a municipality, discovering an unfamiliar approach can open up options worth investigating.
Finding a technology is only the beginning. Its suitability, cost and performance still need careful consideration before it becomes part of a working service.
Nevertheless, creating a clearer meeting point is a constructive step. South Africa has practical problems to solve and people working on inventive answers. Helping those people reach the organisations that could use their work is a technology story worth following.
