Growing a Future: Young Eastern Cape Farmers Receive R3.8 Million Infrastructure Boost
SAnews reported on 25 September 2026 that Vivi-Am Holdings, a youth-led vegetable enterprise in Sigubudwini village, received irrigation, storage infrastructure and fencing valued at R3.8 million.
The project is in Kumkani Mhlontlo Local Municipality, in the OR Tambo district.
WATER THAT SUPPORTS GROWTH
The irrigation system serves 11 hectares under production, while the fencing covers 20 hectares.
Farmer Sihle Guzane told SAnews that the improved system was helping crops receive sufficient water and giving the enterprise greater flexibility to plant throughout the season.
A tractor supplied by the provincial agriculture department in June has also helped with farming operations.
OPPORTUNITY BEYOND THE FIELDS
According to the report, expanded production capacity has supported the appointment of permanent and seasonal workers. Agriculture MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe also highlighted that the young farmers already had a market for their produce.
That combination matters: the ability to grow, people to do the work and customers ready to buy.
BACKING THE PEOPLE DOING THE WORK
Farming asks for patience. There is work between planting and harvesting, and responsibility behind every decision about the next crop.
Practical investment recognises that effort. It gives people who have committed themselves to the land more tools with which to pursue their plans.
This is an encouraging South African story because its promise is grounded in something tangible: young people already producing food, supported by infrastructure that helps them continue.
Their next chapter will be written through the everyday work of growing, harvesting and building their business.
